What to do in your garden this month

January 2009

Garden borders

Tidy beds and borders cut back dead foliage of perennials.  When weather permits dig organic matter into the soil and mulch bare soil.

Ponds

Remove pumps from ponds and any water features to prevent them freezing.  Clean up features to remove algae and dirt.

Vegetables and fruit

Sow cut and come again salads in heated greenhouse or on a windowsill.  Sow sweet peas for early flowering.  Plant fruit trees and bushes when soil is not frozen.

General tips

Order seeds and plants for the new season. Review and if necessary re-plan borders and vegetables patch.
