What to do in your garden this month

Garden Borders
  • Plant summer bedding
  • Prune shrubs that flowered in spring.
  • Clip hedges Water newly planted borders in dry spells
  • Remove faded flowers from roses and border plants.
  • Check for pests and diseases.

Fruit
  • Put straw between strawberry plants to act as a mulch.
  • Thin out raspberry canes, tie into supports Harvest rhubarb regularly.
  • Pick early strawberries.
  • Mulch raspberry canes.
  • Put netting over soft fruit to prevent birds from taking berries.

Vegetables
  • Harvest early potatoes.
  • Thin vegetable seedling to prevent overcrowding Hoe between rows of vegetables to keep down weeds.
  • Sow seeds of broad beans, beetroot, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, peas, rocket and other early vegetables outdoors.
  • Plant outdoor tomatoes. Water onions well to keep bulbs growing.

Greenhouse
  • Train and feed cucumbers and melons.
  • Feed tomatoes once a week.
  • Continue to sow cut and come again lettuce.
  • Feed all plants in active growth.
  • Ventilate the greenhouse on warm, sunny days.
  • Ponds Keep ponds clear of weed.
General tips
  • Mow lawns regularly and give a summer dressing of fertilizer.
